Montepulciano consists two major wine regions- Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG and Rosso di Montepulciano.
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG (since 1980) is made mostly from another Sangiovese clone- Prugnolo Gentile (50-70%), other grapes in blending include: Canaiolo (<20%), and up to 20% of two white grapes – Malvasia and Trebbiano. The wine has to be aged for a minimum of two years in wood casks, and three years to be classified as reserva. Following the lead of Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, producers are also making a reliable DOC wine, Rosso di Montepulciano.
