In 1819, Sir Stamford Raffles founded colonial Singapore as a trading post of the British East India Company. After the company’s collapse in 1858, the islands were ceded to the British Raj as a crown colony. During the Second World War, Singapore was occupied by Japan. It gained independence from the British Empire in 1963 and becoming a sovereign nation in 1965.

Along with Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan, Singapore is one of the original Four Asian Tigers, but has surpassed its peers in terms of GDP per capita. The Singaporean economy is known as one of the freest, most innovative, most competitive, most dynamic and most business-friendly. According to the Corruption Perceptions Index, Singapore is consistently perceived as one of the least corrupt countries in the world, along with New Zealand and the Scandinavian countries.

The Economist has ranked Singapore as the most expensive city to live in, since 2013. It is identified as a tax haven. Singapore is the only country in Asia with an AAA sovereign rating from all major rating agencies, and one of 11 worldwide. Globally, the Port of Singapore and Changi Airport have held the titles of leading “Maritime Capital” and “Best Airport” respectively for consecutive years, while Singapore Airlines is the 2018 “World’s Best Airline”. Singapore is also referred to as the Garden City for its tree-lined streets and greening efforts since independence.

Singapore gained independence as the Republic of Singapore on 9 August 1965 with Lee Kuan Yew and Yusof bin Ishak as the first prime minister and president respectively. Race riots broke out once more in 1969. In 1967, the country co-founded the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Lee Kuan Yew’s emphasis on rapid economic growth, support for business entrepreneurship, and limitations on internal democracy shaped Singapore’s policies for the next half-century and the country progressed to a First World country. On 23 March 2015 Lee Kuan Yew passed away, during the 50th year of independence, declaring a one-week period of public mourning.

Singapore has a tropical rainforest climate with no distinctive seasons, uniform temperature and pressure, high humidity, and abundant rainfall. Temperatures usually range from 25 to 35 °C (77 to 95 °F).

自从2013年，《经济学家》把新加坡评为最贵的居住城市。它是避税天堂，也是亚洲唯一一个被所有主要评分机构评为 AAA主权评级的亚洲国家，全世界共11个。新加坡港和樟宜机场已经被多年连续评为“海港之都”和“最佳机场”，同时新加坡航空也被评为2018年“世界最佳航空公司”。新加坡也被称为花园城市，因其独立后绿树成行的街道和花园建设。

1965年8月5日新加坡共和国独立，李光耀任总理，Yusof bin Ishak为主席。种族骚乱1969年再次爆发。1967年，新加坡成为东南亚联盟共同创办国之一。李光耀着重快速经济发展，支持企业创业，内部民主的局限塑造了新加坡的下半个世纪的政策，让这个国家向第一世界国家跃进。2015年3月23日，李光耀去逝，在独立50年之际，全国举行了长达一个礼拜的追悼。
