Hawke’s Bay wine region the oldest and second largest wine region in new Zealand, with around 10% of production. It is notable for its Merlot, other Bordeaux blend and Syrah, some other varieties include Chardonnay, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc.
Napier is a small, beautiful, relaxing and artistic costal town with some of the best restaurants in the country. Lots of great choices and you will even be surprised when entering either of the restaurants there. The famous Gimblett Gravels region is an region around 800 hectares defined by the extent of this special soil. Around 2/3 of the region belongs to Villa Maria Estate. The designation is trademarked and owned by Gimblett Gravels Winegrowers Association. Membership is open to any growers with vineyards in this region, allowing the use of designation on labels with grapes sourced at least 95% from these vineyards.

On the drive from Auckland to Hawke’s Bay, we passed by Bay of Plenty, which is a vast region with fertile soil and rich agriculture products. 1% of wines are produced in this region. However, no commercial vineyard exists here, all the vines were pulled out in couple decades ago because the high humidity and fertile land are not suitable for grape growing. The only three wineries- Mill’s Reef, Leveret Estate and Steve bird Winery all import grapes from other regions such Marlborough, Hawke’s Bay, Central Otago making all styles of wines.
